Walls of Breath - from inside out

Walls of Breath, from inside out is an ongoing transdisciplinary project (2023–2026) that develops through writing, exchange, and performative translation. It engages with women in prison and outside contexts to explore how intimacy and safety can be imagined, shared, and transformed across distance.

Process

The project unfolds through a series of writing encounters developed in different locations, including the Penitentiary Centre Wad Ras in Barcelona, JVA Stadelheim in Munich, and Clean Break / HMP Askham Grange in London. At its core is a fictional letter-writing process: participants write from intimate perspectives shaped by their environments—such as the bed, the window, or the shower—and these letters circulate across contexts. Others respond from their own lived experiences, creating an ongoing exchange that connects and displaces notions of intimacy, safety, and space. Through this process, a shared yet fragmented body of texts emerges, forming a network of voices that are relational rather than unified.

The project operates through acts of hosting, creating situations where encounters take place across separation and difference. Grounded in lived experience, these exchanges develop through shared conditions and are shaped by trust, distance, and translation.

Forms

The research is translated into a series of artistic forms, including:

Performance: Aixopluc.

Installation: a series of 18 portraits sewn onto transparent organza sheets

Photography: a series of 12 images developed in relation to the performance

Text: letters and readings emerging from the writing processes

These works do not document the process directly but re-articulate it through distinct formal languages.

Context

The different forms have been presented across contexts including Barcelona, London, Munich, and Andorra, and developed in dialogue with institutional and independent partners. The project has also been part of a residency at Villa Waldberta in Munich.

A complete exhibition / presentation of Walls of Breath, from inside out is planned for 2027 at the Felica Fuster Foundation in Barcelona.
