A performative investigation into memory, belief, and the unstable construction of collective truth.
Washing Machine Spin Dry Lead Acid Battery Kill Flywheel is a performative work that explores the tension between personal memory and shared reality.
The project emerges from autobiographical reflections on conflicting memories between the artist and her mother—situations in which remembered events no longer coincide, producing uncertainty around what is perceived as true, imagined, or transformed over time.
Drawing on the aesthetics of online tutorials, viral demonstrations, and figures associated with paranormal abilities such as Uri Geller, the work stages situations in which knowledge, perception, and authority become unstable. Internet culture and televised spectacle function as performative frameworks through which questions of memory, suggestion, and belief are collectively negotiated.
Rather than attempting to resolve these contradictions, the performance creates a shared space of doubt, where truth remains shifting and relational.
Process
The project was developed through autobiographical reflection, research into popular media culture, and the live re-enactment of situations of uncertainty and belief.
As a starting point, the artist revisits conflicting memories shared with her mother—moments in which the same events are remembered differently, producing instability around what can be verified, imagined, or emotionally reconstructed over time. This intimate tension becomes the conceptual core of the work.
Parallel to this process, the artist collected online tutorials, viral demonstrations, television archives, and references to paranormal figures such as Uri Geller, approaching these materials as contemporary systems of belief and persuasion.
Within the performance, these references are translated into live experiments and demonstrations, creating situations in which memory, authority, and perception are collectively negotiated. Through narration, suggestion, and performative testing, the work stages truth not as something fixed, but as something relational, unstable, and continuously reconstructed between people.
Forms
Performance: a performative talk, combining narration, online references, demonstrations, and audience interaction, structured around the testing of supposedly verifiable abilities and internet knowledge
Video documentation: audiovisual traces of the performance and its experiments, extending the circulation of the work beyond the live situation
The work operates through the tension between demonstration and uncertainty, producing a collective situation in which knowledge remains unstable and open to interpretation.
Context
The project was presented in the framework of Liminal GR, curated by Transit Projects, Pilar Cruz and Marc Roig.
It forms part of an early body of works investigating mediated perception, collective belief, and performative forms of knowledge production.
